DRAGON
|
| Fri 10 Feb, 2012 |
| 08:00 PM |
|
Some muse that rock icons Dragon grew up with the Australian music scene and others affirm that it was Dragon that helped the scene grow up. Whatever the case, with hits flowing before Cold Chisel left the rehearsal room, before Icehouse had studied for their algebra finals, and before Australian Crawl had learnt to, Dragon had the nation captivated with “April Sun in Cuba”, “Are You Old Enough?”, “Get That Jive”, “Still In Love With You” and more. The kings of the pub scene and emperors of excess, the band’s live show was unsurpassed, and their rock n roll lifestyle will go down in music industry folklore for generations to come. Tickets $57.50. Usual service and credit card fees will apply.

Question: what do Axl Rose of Guns N’Roses, The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, TV/radio presenter Chris Evans, The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, Huey Morgan of Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie, Sophie Ellis Bextor and at least 30 million other people around the world have in common? Answer: they are all 10cc fans. The missing link between The Beatles and the Gorillaz, 10cc ruled the pop world at a time - the 1970s - when the charts were dominated by some of the most creative and colourful artistes in pop history. Unlike David Bowie, Queen, Elton John or Rod Stewart - all of whom they stood shoulder-to-shoulder with for a decade - 10cc worked not on image or celebrity-status, but on the art of making highly sophisticated rock masterworks into simple-sounding pop hits.
As founding member Graham Gouldman says, "Our main influences were The Beatles and the Beach Boys. Then there was all the other stuff..... For me it was people like Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jimmy Webb, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. Eric [Stewart] was more rock ’n’ roll, the blues and R&B; while Kevin [Godley] and Lol [Creme] were sort of Jacques Brel, more artistic and avant-garde. It’s what happened when we put all those things together that made 10cc." The result was some of the greatest pop records of the 20th century. Tickets: A Res $79.90 B Res $69.90 C Res $59.90. FAME & PHILLIPS

Georgie Fame (The Blues Flames) and Roy Phillips (The Peddlers) For the First Time in Concert. A unique musical journey by two legendary artists sharing intimate stories of their life and times, including all their individual hits, plus duets of their favourite artists, musicians and composers. Live on stage together, for the entire concert. Roy Phillips and Georgie Fame were two of the most successful stories in British popular music of the 1960s and 1970s - both sporting a spare, minimalist image they each played their own individual brand of pop-jazz that was far removed from the rock'n'roll they had played or the rock music that was sprouting around them. They both scored more than enough successes to keep going for several decades and today still have individual sell out concerts around the globe. Now for the first time together...... Georgie Fame and Roy Phillips. Their voices are so well matched for duets. Great depth in the harmony added variance to their performances. Their music embraces numerous genres including pop, rock, blues, soul, country, gospel and jazz. Top that off with their enigmatic and irascible personalities and you have a mainstay of modern music and an inimitable concert experience not to be missed. All tickets $67.00. Please note usual service and credit card fees apply to all prices listed.

YOUNG Dance
TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto in D major
BERNSTEIN West Side Story: Symphonic Dances
TCHAIKOVSKY Francesca da Rimini
Miguel Harth-Bedoya (Conductor) Nicola Benedetti (Violin)
"My heart is full. It thirsts to pour itself out in music". So Tchaikovsky confessed following the disastrous fallout from his 3 week marriage. While convalescing abroad, the composer conceived his breathtaking VIOLIN CONCERTO. The work was initially declared unplayable but has become a cornerstone of the violin repertoire and a test for any soloist. Young's luscious and feisty DANCE will enthral. Bernstein's SYMPHONIC DANCES continues the dance theme with music that is bold, vital and confrontationally modern. The score is filled with violence and passion - drama that is matched by Tchaikovsky's FRANCESCA DE RIMINI. Inspired by Dante's Inferno, the composer takes us to the depths of Hell to witness the consequences of forbidden love in a concert which proves that such tumultuous relationships nevertheless inspire great music. Adult $31.00-$55.00 Child $15.00 Senior $28.00-$50.00. Usual service and credit card fees apply to all prices listed.
