PAUL UBANA JONES Born in London to a Yorkshire mother and a Nigerian father, Paul Ubana Jones was playing guitar by the age of 11, beginning a three decade career that would see him crossing continents and recording eight albums of mostly original songs. After graduating from a London Music college, where he studied guitar, cello and composition, Paul began to forge the solo acoustic style that he has stuck to and developed over the years. In the late seventies Paul based himself in Provence, Southern France, and toured all over Europe and North Africa, as well as venturing extensively into Canada and the US. In the late eighties Paul and his family moved to New Zealand, which is still their permanent home. He has continued to perform internationally, to growing acclaim. Concert performances include sharing the bill with Bob Dylan, B.B King, Norah Jones, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo?, Tuck and Patti and Crowded House.
BULLFROG RATA. He may not have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads, and his accent may be more Manawatu than Mississippi, but Bullfrog Rata is a bluesman heart and soul.
Starting out in the late eighties as a busker on the streets of towns throughout New Zealand because, as he recounts, "no-one wanted to play with me". He is now one of New Zealand's premier blues artist who has notched up an impressive list of support slot credits which include, among others, Tina Turner, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Charley Pride and Junior Wells.

Chamber Music NZ presents Beethoven reCYCLE Part Two, Appassionata
|
| Wed 26 Jun, 2013 |
| 07:30 PM |
|
Michael Houstoun - Piano
"Outstanding Beethoven all round. The special attraction is the rare spiritual dimension in Houstoun's playing of the serene finales... It's as though Beethoven were no longer of this planet when he wrote them" The Listener
Beethoven's cycle of 32 piano sonatas is remarkable. Written the whole length of his creative life, from the early Op 2 dedicated to Haydn to the mighty Op 111 which takes the piano into the realms of pure imagination, this is the "New Testament of the piano repertoire" and one of the supreme treasures of human artistic endeavour.
Their famous names - Moonlight, Tempest, Appassionata, Waldstein - have entered the pantheon of cultural history, and Houstoun presents them here after being "totally immersed" for 20 years with this most extraordinary, human, and powerful of composers.
Michael Houstoun chose to return to New Zealand after his spectacular sweep of final prizes in the world's three most prestigious piano competitions - the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (1973), Leeds Competition (1975) and Tchaikovsky Competition (1982).
Hugely in demand for concertos with our finest orchestras and chamber concerts the length of the country - his regular CMNZ tours with the winner of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition included - he has been based here ever since, and is adding increasing solo recitals to his repertoire with his recent Goldberg and Beethoven Diabelli Variations.
Part Two of this year-long cycle is made up of the fourth programme which includes Beethoven's Apassionata.
Appassionata
Sonata in G, Op.49 No.2
Sonata in C, Op.2 No.3
Sonata in F sharp, Op.78
Sonata in G, Op.31 No.1
Sonata in F minor, Op.57 'Appassionata'

THE GYPSY BARON
|
| Sat 20 Jul, 2013 |
| 07:30 PM |
| Sun 21 Jul, 2013 |
| 02:00 PM |
|
"The Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss II is a romantic musical feast of Comic Opera; full of great music including various famous dance themes, great arias, ensembles and chorus music. It matches the appeal of his Die Fledermaus but uses an historical setting enabling a wider range of musical expression.
Johann Strauss II was known as the Waltz King, and many of the musical numbers will be familiar as they are frequently used as concert pieces. As a romantic work on a greater scale than Die Fledermaus, Strauss calls for a wider range of orchestral forces and this production tours with 36 players from Orchestra Wellington and a cast of 45 singers. Reduced versions of the work have been published to simplify its performance, but this is a rare opportunity to hear Strauss's original version of Gypsy Baron, performed in English, on tour with full sets and great costumes, not to be missed.
Adult From $33.00 to $63.00
Senior From $28.00 to $54.00 (with ID)
Student From $25.00 to $49.00 (with ID)

NZSO presents MAGNIFICENT MOZART
|
| Sat 19 Oct, 2013 |
| 07:30 PM |
|
Jupiter was the Ancient Roman King of the gods and it is fitting that Mozart's Symphony No. 41 is named for this most powerful deity. The Jupiter was his last work in the symphony form and achieves an apotheosis of triumph, mastery and joy. The story of Idomeneo also comes from Antiquity and in the ballet music Mozart wrote for this opera he pays tribute to the great French composer, Christoph Willibald Gluck. The youthful Concerto for Flute and Harp was composed for the Duc de Guines, a flautist, and his accomplished harp-playing daughter, and is a lyrical gem in the repertoire. Of course, a concert dedicated to Mozart would not be complete without a little night music. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is perhaps his most well-known work, and despite its familiarity, still has a freshness and sparkle that never fails to charm.
In this concert we are proud to share with you the stunning talents of NZSO Principal Flautist Bridget Douglas and Principal Harpist Carolyn Mills. Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp allows the virtuosity of these two soloists to be heard in full flight. The orchestra is given ample opportunity to delight in the dramatics of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and to employ the complete palate of baroque colours as they dance through the Chaconne from the Idomeneo ballet music. Leave this concert swept up by the grandeur of the 'Jupiter' Symphony, and confirm once again the brilliance of Mozart, especially when conducted with such renowned early music specialist Nicholas McGegan
